
KNX vs DALI-2 vs Dynalite vs C-Bus Compared
Almost every lighting control comparison you will read online is written by someone who sells one of the systems. We install and commission all four, which means we have no particular reason to talk you into any of them — and we regularly tell clients that the expensive option is the wrong one for their building.
The short answer: use DALI-2 when the job is lighting in a commercial building. Use KNX when lighting is one of several systems that need to work together. Use Dynalite for hospitality and large venues where its room-automation model fits. Keep C-Bus if you already have it and it works — but do not specify it for a new project.

All four do dimming and scenes competently. The differences that actually decide a project are openness, scope and what happens in fifteen years.

KNX — the open building bus
KNX is an open international standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3, and EN 50090 in Europe) for home and building control. More than 500 manufacturers produce KNX-certified products that are independently tested to interoperate — ABB, Theben, Zennio, Basalte, Siemens, Gira, Jung and many others.
The important thing about KNX is that it is not a lighting system. It is a building bus that happens to do lighting very well, alongside HVAC, shading, access control and energy monitoring, on one twisted pair with no central controller and no cloud dependency.
Strengths
- No vendor lock-in — if a manufacturer disappears, another one's device drops in
- Decentralised, so there is no single controller whose failure stops the building
- One system covering lighting, climate, blinds, security and energy together
- Long backward compatibility — the standard has been stable for decades
Weaknesses
- Higher device cost per point than DALI for pure lighting work
- ETS, the commissioning software, is licensed and has a real learning curve — fewer electricians can work on it
- Overkill if lighting is genuinely all you need

DALI-2 — purpose-built for lighting
DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is defined by IEC 62386. It is an open standard, but a narrow one: it does lighting and nothing else, and it does it better than anything else.
A DALI line carries up to 64 individually addressable devices, in as many as 16 groups with 16 scenes, over a polarity-free two-core pair with free topology. Every driver talks back — reporting lamp failure, driver faults, energy use and burn hours.
DALI-2 extends certification from drivers to control devices as well: sensors, wall plates and application controllers. That is what makes multi-vendor systems genuinely reliable rather than hopeful. D4i adds standardised energy and diagnostic reporting from inside the luminaire.

- Native automated emergency lighting testing — a large commercial cost saving
- Per-luminaire fault reporting, so failures are found before occupants complain
- Lowest cost per point for large numbers of fittings
- Open, multi-vendor, and now the default in commercial specification
Weaknesses
- Lighting only — anything else needs a separate system or a gateway
- Needs an application controller for anything beyond basic logic
- Every luminaire needs a DALI driver; it cannot be bolted onto arbitrary fittings
- Cheap installs are often commissioned in broadcast mode, which discards the entire point

Philips Dynalite — room automation, not just lighting
Dynalite was developed in Sydney in 1987 by John Gunton, acquired by Philips Lighting in 2009, and is now part of Signify. It communicates over DyNet, a proprietary protocol running on a modified RS-485 serial bus over Cat5 — though much of DyNet is openly published, which makes third-party integration more practical than with a fully closed system.
Signify positions Dynalite as a room automation system, and that framing is fair. It natively integrates HVAC, motorised blinds, AV, access control, hospitality property-management systems and BMS via KNX, BACnet and DMX gateways. It is used in serious buildings — the Burj Khalifa, Westfield centres, major museums and arenas.
Strengths
- Excellent in hospitality and large venues, where its room model fits naturally
- Genuinely broad integration for a proprietary platform
- Mature, stable, and very well proven at scale
Weaknesses
- Single vendor — you are tied to Signify's roadmap and pricing
- Commissioning software and training are restricted, so your choice of support is narrower
- Rarely the cheapest option for a straightforward office fit-out
C-Bus — the Australian incumbent
C-Bus was developed by Clipsal Integrated Systems in the early 1990s and is now maintained by Schneider Electric under the SpaceLogic brand. It is proprietary, running on Cat5 UTP at roughly 36 V DC, supporting segments up to 1,000 m with up to 100 units per segment.
It deserves respect. C-Bus dominated Australian residential and commercial lighting for two decades and there is an enormous installed base across Queensland and New South Wales. Plenty of C-Bus systems installed in 2005 are still working.
Strengths
- Huge Australian installed base and familiarity among local electricians
- Robust and long-lived in practice
- Good range of wall switches and plates
Weaknesses
- Single manufacturer, with all hardware and software under one company's control
- No native emergency lighting testing
- Weaker DALI and energy integration than the alternatives
- Toolkit software is licensed, so not every electrician can reprogram it
- New commercial specification has largely moved to DALI-2
To be clear: if you have C-Bus and it works, leave it alone. Ripping out a functioning system is almost never justified on technical grounds. We repair and extend C-Bus constantly. But for a new project, the openness argument is decisive.

Choosing by scenario
New home, premium build
KNX. A house needs lighting, climate, blinds, and often access control and energy monitoring working together. That is precisely what a building bus is for, and doing it with four separate systems and gateways costs more and breaks more often.
Commercial office fit-out
DALI-2. Lowest cost per point at scale, per-luminaire fault reporting, automated emergency testing, and re-zoning in software when a tenancy is re-partitioned. Add KNX only if HVAC and shading need to be part of the same system.
Aged care or healthcare
DALI-2, primarily for the compliance logging. Under AS/NZS 2293.2, emergency luminaires need a 90-minute discharge test at intervals not exceeding six months, by a competent person, recorded in a logbook. In a facility where accreditation audits are routine, automatic per-luminaire records are worth a great deal.
Hotel or large venue
Dynalite, usually. Its room-automation model and property-management integration were built for exactly this, and it is proven at scale. KNX is a legitimate alternative if you want to avoid single-vendor dependency.
Existing C-Bus building
Keep it and extend it. If it is failing or you are refurbishing anyway, stage a migration — run DALI-2 or KNX on the refurbished floors with gateways back to the existing system, so the building upgrades in phases rather than one disruptive changeover.
Warehouse or single-zone space
Possibly none of them. If you have one zone, simple occupancy switching and no plans to change, 0-10V dimming with sensors may be entirely adequate. Specifying an addressable system for a building that will never use addressing is money spent on capability nobody will touch.

Can these systems work together?
Yes, and in commercial buildings they usually do. The common pattern is DALI-2 handling luminaires within each zone, with a KNX or BACnet gateway tying lighting to blinds, HVAC and the wider building system. Dynalite gateways to KNX, BACnet and DMX. C-Bus can bridge to DALI and KNX, though with more compromise. Choosing one platform rarely means excluding the others.
Which is cheapest?
For a large number of fittings, DALI-2 generally has the lowest cost per point. For a small installation, the application controller can make it look expensive. KNX costs more per device but replaces several systems at once. The honest answer is that hardware cost is usually not the deciding factor — commissioning quality and long-term supportability dominate total cost, and they are where corners get cut.
What happens if my installer disappears?
This is the question that should drive the decision, and it is the one nobody asks. With KNX or DALI-2, any competent integrator can pick your system up because the standards are open and multi-vendor. With a proprietary platform your options are narrower. In every case, insist on receiving the project file at handover — whoever holds it controls the system, and some installers keep it deliberately.
Is wireless a serious option?
For retrofit, sometimes. Casambi Bluetooth mesh and KNX RF are legitimate where a control cable cannot reach — heritage fabric, occupied buildings, staged upgrades. For a new build where cable can be planned, wired remains more reliable, and the cost difference at construction stage is marginal.
The honest verdict
There is no single best system, which is why comparisons written by single-platform integrators tend to reach the same conclusion as whatever that integrator sells.
For a commercial building where the job is lighting, DALI-2 is the default and it is the right default. For a building where lighting is one of several systems, KNX earns its extra cost. Dynalite is excellent in hospitality and large venues. C-Bus is a system to maintain, not to specify.
What matters more than the platform is the commissioning. A well-commissioned C-Bus system outperforms a DALI-2 system left in broadcast mode with factory-default sensors, every time. The technology choice sets a ceiling; the commissioning determines how close you get to it.
